Piedmont Triad Airport Authority awarded Stone Restoration the Piedmont Triad International Airport (PTIA) Elevated Roadway Renovations Phase 2. Carl Walker Inc designated the scope of work to include 8,000 square feet of concrete repairs and the installation of 71,100 square feet of traffic grade deck coating. The project scope also consisted of drain installation, replacement of expansion joints (2 types), joint sealant replacement and curb replacement. One of the major unforeseen conditions the Team faced was migratory corrosion in various areas of concrete that appeared only after the traffic coating was applied. After consulting with the Manufacturer and the Engineer, Stone Restoration executed the plan to remove the corroded areas of concrete, treat the rebar, replace the concrete and reapply the coating. The plan was successfully executed without compromising the Manufacturer’s warranty. Due to heavy snow fall and runoff from a harsh winter, the project experienced extensive weather delays. Every project has weather delays, but this project had seventy seven documented weather days that pushed the project end date beyond originally scheduled. All concrete repairs were completed with Sika 321 FC (bag mix) to achieve a four hour cure time. This allowed Stone Restoration to fully execute all repairs and coating per phase in its entirety before moving onto another phase. Despite all the challenges on this project, Stone Restoration, Sika and Carl Walker achieved a successful end to the project.
